The Clay Room

The Clay Room is Camberwell Community Centre’s purpose built ceramics studio situated at the back of the centre, quietly nestled in the greenery of the courtyard. It is a space designed for inspiration and purpose.

The studio runs 5 Shimpo V-Lite wheels and offers a range of high quality finishes, glazes and tools. Students have a choice of pale stoneware clay and a more rustic stoneware to work with. Firing is also included in the class cost and your teacher will explain the limits on sizes and pieces produced as well as allocation of clay at the start of the term.

All classes teach both hand-building and wheel-throwing techniques, students are free to follow their preference.

Our ceramicists are all practicing potters, who enjoy sharing their knowledge with beginners and advanced participants. The Clay Room is a place where students can work at their own pace, take guidance when required and self-direct the projects they choose. We hope you find your “happy place” when you sign up and start your journey with clay.

People are saying…

Love Monday in the studio with Yuso it helps me focus after the weekend. Although hand-building was my main interest when I started ceramics I am now enjoying using the wheel as well.

·       “You could almost twirl with joy and break out in song when the room is alive with the sound of ceramics.

Teacher, Gill Martin, forever centered, like some sort of ceramic yogi, has the patience and guidance to have you starting on your dream project, not fresh out the gate, but on your first steps into the clay room.

The shimpo whisper pottery wheels mean that anyone can take part in the conversations, which are almost as varied as the skill levels and backgrounds of people taking the class.

But it's not just about the clay, but the friends made along the way.

In loving memory of past classmate Mumma Donna” –Kyle B.

“The pottery class in the Clay Room is fantastic! Our teacher Gill is highly skilled, knowledgeable and very patient. The class caters for absolute beginners through to old hands and is flexible enough for students to be doing hand building or wheel work.

Highly recommended (friends & family always appreciate any pieces that are produced!)”
