Introduction to Nature Illustration (Beginners)
Step into the world of nature illustration with this gentle introduction to drawing using coloured pencils.
Designed especially for beginners, this course offers a relaxed and encouraging environment where you can explore your creativity, learn new skills, and enjoy the process of bringing the natural world to life on the page.
You will be introduced to the essential techniques of nature illustration, including basic sketching, shading, colour layering, and creating texture, all at a comfortable pace. With a focus on observation and enjoyment rather than perfection, this class is a space to experiment, ask questions, and build your confidence as an artist.
Whether you have never picked up a coloured pencil before or are returning to art after a break, you will find friendly guidance, shared inspiration, and the joy of learning in a group of fellow beginners. By the end of the course, you’ll have completed a variety of small drawings of natural subjects, and built the foundational skills to move on to more complex drawings.
This class is a prerequisite for our Intermediate Nature Illustration class which runs on Tuesday afternoons.

Unlock the full potential of your iPhone camera in this fun and practical 4 week photography course. Whether you’re a beginner or just want to sharpen your skills, you’ll learn how to take stunning photos using only your phone.
Across four weeks, you’ll explore everything from the basics of composition and lighting to advanced camera modes and creative editing techniques. Each class blends simple lessons with hands-on activities such as photo walks, scavenger hunts, and guided projects.
You’ll also dive into the art of editing, first using your phone’s built-in tools before experimenting with popular apps like Snapseed, Lightroom Mobile, and VSCO. By the final weeks, you’ll discover how to tell a story through photography, plan a photo essay, and present your work in a supportive group showcase.
By the end of the course, you’ll understand how to capture beautiful images in any situation, develop your own creative style and workflow. You’ll walk away with a portfolio of photos, practical editing skills, and the confidence to keep experimenting and growing as a photographer.

NATURE illustration (Intermediate)
In this course, you will learn to create detailed illustrations of natural subjects using coloured pencils. Subjects may include plants, fungi, birds, wood, and other organic forms.
Through structured lessons, you'll develop key skills in sketching, shading, colour layering, and texturing to bring your drawings to life.
Through the term you will delve into different aspects of drawing such as:
Accurate Sketching and Proportions:
Learn to sketch basic shapes and proportions found in natural forms, laying a strong foundation for detailed and accurate illustrations.
Shading and Depth:
Develop your ability to add light and shadow, creating depth and dimension in your drawings through effective shading techniques.
Colour Identification and Layering:
Gain a solid understanding of colour mixing and layering to replicate the varied hues and tonal shifts found in nature.
Texturing Natural Surfaces and Fine Details:
Learn how to use coloured pencils to create intricate textures such as leaves, bark, fungi, feathers, and other organic surfaces, capturing the richness and diversity of the natural world.
Collaborative Learning:
Throughout the course, you'll work on shared illustration exercises and projects, giving you the opportunity to learn alongside others, share insights, and receive constructive feedback.
By the end of the term, you will have completed one or more detailed natural subject illustrations and be equipped with the skills to continue exploring coloured pencil techniques in your future artwork.
