Introduction to Nature Illustration
Step into the world of nature illustration with this gentle introduction to drawing using coloured pencils. Designed especially for beginners, this course offers a relaxed and encouraging environment where you can explore your creativity, learn new skills, and enjoy the process of bringing the natural world to life on the page.
You will be introduced to the essential techniques of nature illustration, including basic sketching, shading, colour layering, and creating texture, all at a comfortable pace. With a focus on observation and enjoyment rather than perfection, this class is a space to experiment, ask questions, and build your confidence as an artist.
Whether you have never picked up a coloured pencil before or are returning to art after a break, you will find friendly guidance, shared inspiration, and the joy of learning in a group of fellow beginners. By the end of the course, you’ll have completed a variety of small drawings of natural subjects, and built the foundational skills to move on to more complex drawings.
This class is a prerequisite for our full Nature Illustration class which runs on Tuesday afternoons.
No experience necessary, just curiosity and a love of nature!

In this hands-on class, you’ll explore a variety of techniques and skills through guided exercises and group demonstrations. As you learn and grow, you’ll have the chance to refine your abilities, working towards creating beautiful fine art projects with coloured pencils.
Each session will give you plenty of time to practice, experiment, and perfect your skills, while receiving helpful, personalised feedback from your instructor along the way. It’s a great way to learn, grow, and have fun together with others!
Collaborative Learning:
Throughout the course, you'll learn alongside others, share insights, and receive constructive feedback.
This course is suited to those who have already begun developing their nature illustration skills. Intro to colour and palette mixing
In this class, students will explore the fundamentals of colour, tone, shade and value-essential elements for discovering your own unique artistic voice. If you’ve ever found your palette to be muddy, this class will help you match your reference images with greater ease.
This class will enable you to mix nearly any colour you desire. You’ll learn how to approach each new artwork with a fresh perspective and select colours to achieve your intended results. We will also look into preparing different painting surfaces, paint mixing, mediums, varnishes, upscaling work and how to create a good composition. For returning students, we’ll build upon your existing techniques and painting skills throughout the term. In the final sessions, you will use your own personally developed palette to create original pieces equipping you with tools to further enhance your colour knowledge.
This class is for beginners as well as those who wish to revisit the basics to revitalise their work. We will discuss all of these paints, brushes and other supplies in week one, so if you do not have everything on the first day it is fine.
